Creation protection of large intentional redcats

[edit]

Rose Abrams (talk) 10:27, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Rose Abrams: could you explain what these are about and why the categories should not be created? I suspect the reason no admin has picked this up is that, like me, they are not sure what is going on here and don't want to be responsible for something they don't understand. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Kontributor 2K could you answer Jmabel about this? You seem to be familiar with these specific categories and the associated efforts, while I am a cross-Commons categorizer who just encounters them by chance. Rose Abrams (talk) 20:30, 19 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Actually the red letters W3c-nc-User-ID at the bottom of the image pages are just reminders I use not to forget that the files have not been w3c-checked, and incidentally to group process the files if needed. Since in the end these categories will be emptied, there's no reason for them to be created ; this said, these categories are in my watch list and an accidental creation would be unlikely, since there is now a message on top, if not unproblematic. So eventually I don't care if they're protected or not. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 11:04, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Kontributor 2K: if you intend to keep deliberately placing files in these categories (even if only temporarily in each case), could you please create them as user categories? That would hide them from people who are not logged in, and keep them out of the lists of categories needing creation. Thanks. - Jmabel ! talk 20:01, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel: I could, but actually I don't intend to keep deliberately placing files in there, only remove them (once w3c-checked) - also, some faster solution might be, for people involved in Special:WantedCategories, to participate to a special 2-days-w3c-mass-file-validation marathon. just an idea. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 20:09, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
edit : ok, I've created categories for the ones where there are the most files, I shall empty the others by next week --Kontributor 2K (talk) 20:42, 20 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Block for Geoffroi

[edit]

Please block my account indefinitely. LGBT users aren't welcome here. I don't want to be dumb enough to try coming back again and again. Thanks. Geoffroi 20:47, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

You can add {{Retired}} to your user page. Users should not be blocked unless it falls within the blocking policy. Thuresson (talk) 19:58, 21 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Caption vandalism due to the subject matter is a pain to revert all the time. Protection would be great. JayCubby (talk) 17:32, 22 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

✓ Done: Semiprotected for 3 months. --Achim55 (talk) 17:40, 22 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

User impersonation

[edit]

Deantak (talk · contribs) has impersonated Dean Takahashi to upload his photograph; I've spoken to Dean, who confirmed the user is not him (though he has graciously granted permission for the photo anyway). I can't see anything in the username policy that addresses this directly, but I figured it was worth reporting the impersonation. Rhain (he/him) 22:09, 23 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Against policy for being "confusing" and "disruptive". DMacks (talk) 22:33, 23 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
✓ Done indef-blocked. If they want to participate here, they need a different account name. No other edits on this one, so no point to renaming it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:41, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Chris Rea 01 AB.jpg

[edit]

This i MY photo and I'd like to upload better quality version of it. Chepry (talk) 03:08, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

It seems it is protected by cascading protection from Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/pl, apparently bot-maintained and related to something in the Polish Wikipedia. It was added to that list only 4 hours before you made this request, which is about a file you haven't touched since 2012. Would you mind explaining why you suddenly now want to edit it? This all seems a bit odd.
Also Pinging @AntiCompositeNumber, Legoktm, Steinsplitter, Krinkle: what would be the preferred way to remove this from its cascading protection? - Jmabel ! talk 06:44, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not done. Please upload better version of the file, using different filename. Taivo (talk) 12:18, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for making me sure that after 25 years it's time to stop supporting Wikipedia. You must be very proud of yourself @Taivo... Chepry (talk) 12:39, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
I want to edit it because it is my file. Simple because. And I noticed that someone (100cellsman) destroyed the picture by improperly editing it. Chepry (talk) 12:37, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Once uploaded and freely licensed it ceases to be your file. Herby talk thyme 12:38, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Chepry: How was an upload which "adjusted levels" improper?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:48, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Jmabel The file is cascading-protected because it's in use on the Polish Wikipedia main page, in their recent deaths section. The bot runs every 10 minutes and will include any image displayed on the configured pages for that wiki, overwriting any changes made to the protection gallery. In general, editing images currently used on a main page is discouraged, I'd suggest uploading the new version as a separate file, and we can merge/split them later as necessary. AntiCompositeNumber (they/them) (talk) 14:31, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Chepry: I really hope you do not abandon Commons over this. Please consider this situation from the point of view of the project, rather than just yourself. This picture is temporarily protected precisely because the Polish Wikipedia temporarily has it on its main page. Overwriting the picture with a different version at this time is effectively editing the main page of the Polish Wikipedia without their consent.
You would have been entirely within your rights to object in a timely manner to someone overwriting your image rather than creating a new version. Also entirely within your rights, even now: if you want, the authorship on that file page can be changed to say "author=Andrzej Barabasz (Chepry), significantly lightened by 100cellsman" to make it clear that the choices made in the overwrite are not yours. Still, at this point: your original version had this filename for a little under 4 months; this version has had this filename for over 13 years, and is used in over 100 places on Wikimedia projects. At this point, if you want your original version also to be available, that is fine but it really belongs under a different filename, as a matter of stability of the wikis. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 24 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

File:Wiktionary-logo-prg.svg and File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-lzz.svg

[edit]

I need File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-prg.svg, File:Wiktionary-logo-prg.svg and File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-lzz.svg to all be protected so they can be set as the logos of the three wikis. Please do so. Thanks, Kxeo (talk) 03:14, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
