Creation protection of large intentional redcats
[edit]- Apply creation protection to the following titles: Category:W3c-nc-ET, Category:W3c-nc-Sq, Category:W3c-nc-Sr, Category:W3c-nc-A3, Category:W3c-nc-Tv, Category:W3c-nc-JN, Category:W3c-nc-BF, Category:W3c-nc-Ad, Category:W3c-nc-TC, Category:W3c-nc-Sp, Category:W3c-nc-Sy
- Reason: These categories are used to house unchecked SVG files of various types, and they are (according to this log and this discussion) deliberately kept uncreated for visibility. @Kontributor 2K: is better involved in this may have further information.
- Purpose: This is not to counter vandalism, but rather to prevent accidental good-faith creation of the titles. I am personally currently working on reducing the Special:WantedCategories backlog in which they often show up, and presumably other users may encounter the larger ones. So creation protection would communicate the categories' intentions well.

- Actually the red letters W3c-nc-User-ID at the bottom of the image pages are just reminders I use not to forget that the files have not been w3c-checked, and incidentally to group process the files if needed. Since in the end these categories will be emptied, there's no reason for them to be created ; this said, these categories are in my watch list and an accidental creation would be unlikely, since there is now a message on top, if not unproblematic. - @Jmabel: I could, but actually I don't intend to keep deliberately placing files in there, only remove them (once w3c-checked) - also, some faster solution might be, for people involved in Special:WantedCategories, to participate to a special 2-days-w3c-mass-file-validation marathon. just an idea. --Kontributor 2K (talk) 20:09, 20 December 2025 (UTC)

User impersonation
[edit]Deantak (talk · contribs) has impersonated Dean Takahashi to upload his photograph; I've spoken to Dean, who confirmed the user is not him (though he has graciously granted permission for the photo anyway). - It seems it is protected by cascading protection from Commons:Auto-protected files/wikipedia/pl, apparently bot-maintained and related to something in the Polish Wikipedia. It was added to that list only 4 hours before you made this request, which is about a file you haven't touched since 2012. Would you mind explaining why you suddenly now want to edit it? This all seems a bit odd.

- @Jmabel The file is cascading-protected because it's in use on the Polish Wikipedia main page, in their recent deaths section. The bot runs every 10 minutes and will include any image displayed on the configured pages for that wiki, overwriting any changes made to the protection gallery. In general, editing images currently used on a main page is discouraged, I'd suggest uploading the new version as a separate file, and we can merge/split them later as necessary. - @Chepry: I really hope you do not abandon Commons over this. Please consider this situation from the point of view of the project, rather than just yourself. This picture is temporarily protected precisely because the Polish Wikipedia temporarily has it on its main page. Overwriting the picture with a different version at this time is effectively editing the main page of the Polish Wikipedia without their consent.
- You would have been entirely within your rights to object in a timely manner to someone overwriting your image rather than creating a new version. Also entirely within your rights, even now: if you want, the authorship on that file page can be changed to say "author=Andrzej Barabasz (Chepry), significantly lightened by 100cellsman" to make it clear that the choices made in the overwrite are not yours. Still, at this point: your original version had this filename for a little under 4 months; this version has had this filename for over 13 years, and is used in over 100 places on Wikimedia projects. At this point, if you want your original version also to be available, that is fine but it really belongs under a different filename, as a matter of stability of the wikis. - Jmabel ! talk 19:25, 24 December 2025 (UTC)
